Common Types of Cannabinoids Found in Cannabis: 10 Essential Ones

What are the common types of cannabinoids found in cannabis? The healing component of cannabis has been known to a lot of people for a long time already. It is known that more than 60 U.S. and international health organizations grant patients immediate legal access to medicinal cannabis under a physician’s supervision, thus the medicinal value of cannabis became hard to ignore after proving its effectiveness. So, what are these common types of cannabinoids found in cannabis? Let’s discuss them.

Common Types Of Cannabinoids Found In Cannabis Sativa

Found in the cannabis plant are numerous cannabinoids. A cannabis sativa plant consists of 480 different compounds, and only around 66 are identified as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are suggested to reduce anxiety and inflammation. Cannabinoids are also believed to kill cancer cells and slow tumor growth while stimulating appetite and improving weight gain in people who are diagnosed with cancer and AIDS. Several concerns have been raised about the safety of cannabinoids. There are different types of cannabinoids. To name a few, these are cannabigerols, cannabichromene, cannabidiol, tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabinol.

How Can Cannabinoids Affect You?

The common types of cannabinoids found in cannabis have effects that mainly differ on the brain area involved. The results may alter memory, cognition, and psychomotor performance; these may be due to the effects on the limbic system. On the other hand, the impact on the mesolimbic pathway may affect responses; thus, pain perception may also be altered.

Are Cannabinoids Harmful?

The common types of cannabinoids found in cannabis may have different effects on various people. Before the FDA approved Epidiolex, which is a purified cannabinoids product as a drug, different tests and studies were done to prove its effectiveness and safety. In the period that the drug was tested, the given side effects to some participants in these studies were mostly diarrhea or sleepiness. Some developed abnormalities on tests done to their liver function. In some cases, participants had to stop the tests after they developed liver problems.

Health Benefits And Uses Of Cannabinoids

Drugs containing the common types of cannabinoids found in cannabis are believed to relieve pain. Some research studies have been done on the effects of cannabis and cannabinoids on chronic pain, mainly neuropathic pain that is commonly known as pain caused by nerve injury or damage. It is also believed that cannabinoids can reduce anxiety. A study conducted on 24 people with social anxiety disorder proved that they felt less anxious after taking cannabinoids and taking a public speaking test. Also, cannabinoids have been used for the treatment of seizures. Studies show that cannabinoids are also used to lower the pressure in the eye, but are not as effective as treatments that are already in use. Cannabinoids only affect the pressure in the eye for a short period of time.

Another health benefit of using cannabinoids is treating HIV/AIDS. It is believed that unintentional weight loss can be a problem for people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. In the year 1992, the FDA approved the use of a drug containing cannabinoid used in the treatment of loss of appetite associated with weight loss by people who are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. On the other hand, some cannabis/cannabinoid preparations have been used in the study of multiple sclerosis symptoms, and these cannabinoids include dronabinol, nabiximols, nabilone, cannabis extract, and smoked cannabis. A review of 17 studies of a variety of cannabinoid preparations having 3,161 participants found that cannabinoids have made small improvements in spasticity, bladder problems, and pain in those people who were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

10 Essential Cannabinoids You Should Know About

First one would be cannabichromene. This cannabinoid is considered to be effective in treating inflammation and skin conditions. Second is Tetrahydrocannabinol Acid, which is used to help treat nausea and stimulate appetite, and is excellent for treating inflammation from arthritis and lupus. The third is Cannabinol which is also considered non-psychoactive. Fourth is Tetrahydrocannabivarin which can help fight weight gain due to its appetite suppressant qualities. The fifth is Cannabigerol which shows potential for treating pain and can help ease inflammatory bowel disease, and this can also reduce intraocular pressure. Sixth is Cannabidiolic Acid that can be found in raw high CBD cannabis plants and acts as a neuroprotectant. Seventh is Cannabivarin which reduces seizure activity in brain slices examined ex vivo, and in mice and rats, this cannabinoid is also considered to fight signs of nausea in rodents. Eighth is Cannabigerolic Acid which is the mother of all Cannabinoids, which can work as an analgesic to help relieve pain. Ninth is Cannabichromenate; and lastly, there is Delta-8 THC.

Research funded by different international health organizations is investigating the potential relief of pain caused by the use of the common types of cannabinoids found in cannabis. The primary goal of these studies is to strengthen the evidence regarding cannabis properties if they have medical value in treating certain illnesses. In conclusion, although there are a number of studies conducted to determine the effects of cannabinoids in multiple diseases, there are still risks considered.

Conclusion

The efficacy of cannabinoids has remained highly controversial even after studies have shown that it is widely being used for therapeutic purposes. However, due to methodological limitations, it is said that the conclusions made do not support the assessed comparisons. Although there are adverse effects in using cannabinoids such as the risk of developing cannabis dependence, several governments have approved the use of this plant. Researchers decided to further study cannabinoids while declaring the challenges in conducting it. Issues regarding cannabis-based medicines are improving, and these issues are the following, one is the legal status and the lack of appropriate regulation or product quality control.

To summarize, there is evidence that using cannabinoids is effective in treating chronic pain in adults and improving multiple sclerosis spasticity symptoms. The harm caused by heavy cannabis use is considered modest compared to that caused by other psychoactive substances.
